The User Interface Toolkit was developed by Sun Microsystems employees as a C++ language on top of the XView graphical toolkit. The UIT boasts asset of design calls for client-server structural design. It consists of an API (Application Programming Interface which resides on the central server that has the ability of interacting with variety of clients. It was developed to provide freedom to custom web development experts who can make some innovative discoveries and focus on computational experiments.

UIT was an internal tools project developed by Mark Soloway and Joe Warcheza in 1990. Mark Soloway continued the project and created another version of UIT called UITV2 in 1992. The User Interface Toolkit brought a whole new level to the HPC (High Performance Computing) experience to website development services . Web developers are free to get the work accomplished as it allows user-friendly clients to get rid of time wasting barriers.

The User Interface Toolkit ensures easy access of all computing resources within the HPCMP (High Performance Computing and Modernization Program). Since UIT had a flexible design it aimed to have ease in websites development. It allowed developers to easily build one-size-fits-all interfaces. It also encouraged the creation of highly customized tools for in the web development and web page development field.

The User Interface Toolkit gave considerable importance to the security to users and developers. It used the Kerberos authentication tools. Web development services could easily access API through the Kerberos cards. The rich toolset also allowed custom web development experts create custom applications to handle file transfers, authentication and job submissions. Developers can download the complete source code for free. The source code is still available.

The main objective of User Interface Toolkit was to make life easier for developers. There were few interface ideas before the launch of UIT. It offered tools to develop next generation interfaces to High Performance Computing Systems. It provided a space for great ideas to evolve, take shape and mature.
