Media Rooms

Media Rooms are rooms that are frequently added to homes by homeowners looking to establish a single room where they can enjoy family entertainment. Building a media room allows homeowners to be creative while they situate all of the family's preferred entertainment equipment into a single area in the home. Media rooms not only serve as great conversation pieces, but they are rooms that also prove to be incredibly practical.

1. What are Media Rooms?

When a person visualizes a media room, the first thing they usually think of is television entertainment. Yet, media rooms embrace far more than television technology. While it is true that often times the television is one of the highlights of a media room, media rooms also incorporate a variety of equipment for entertainment purposes.

Media rooms offer a place where people can gather, whether it is a family gathering or a planned party, and such rooms are designed to maximize the comfort of the individuals utilizing the room. In addition to high tech equipment, media rooms also include beautiful décor and comfortable furniture where individuals can relax and unwind. Further, media rooms and home theatres prove to be practical because they provide the homeowner with additional storage space. Household organization is therefore maximized when a media room is established - a central location where all entertainment items can be stored and utilized.

2. Reasons for Creating Media Rooms

There are varieties of reasons why people elect to establish a media room or home theatre and the reasons differ as much as the personalities of the homeowners that decide to create such rooms. Some people want a room where the entire family can get together and share some quality time together. Other people want to establish a single locale within the home where they can enjoy all of the entertainment equipment they have invested in or plan to invest in. Meanwhile, still other individuals want to establish a media room because they want a home that offers the maximum comfort to those living in the home as well as guests that visit the home.

If you are planning to build a media room than you are going to want to make the room as comfortable as possible. Quality décor and quality technology will have to go into every inch of the media room to make the most out of the room for the investment spent. While you may want a media room that is simplistic, other homeowners may invest large amounts of money into a media room or home theatre -- the level of complexity is totally up to you in terms of design and décor.

3. Establishing the Media Room and Considerations

If you are in the process of planning a media room you will want to sit down and give due consideration to every aspect of the room. The walls, the lighting, the floor, the equipment, and furnishings should all be listed accordingly. You will need to ask yourself several questions as you plan your media room:

- What color or colors do you want to theme the room with?
The theme of the room defines the comfort level of the room. You may decide to paint the walls with matching warm or cool colors. You will then want to match all of furnishings with the colors you have selected to unify the appearance of the room. The color scheme of a media room therefore requires careful consideration.

- What type of lighting is conducive for an entertainment room?
Lighting plays a big part in terms of media rooms and they comfort they offer. You will want lighting that does not add to much glare to television screens and that is not so dim that it becomes difficult to see. Lighting also sets the atmosphere of the media room in question.

- What kind of equipment do you want in the room?
Many people first consider the television that they want in a media room, but other technology also goes into the making of an incredible home theatre. Home stereo systems, projectors, CD players, DVD players, movie screens, and gaming equipment also need to be considered. Further, every member of the family may have a different entertainment preference and such preferences will need to be taken under advisement.

- What kind of window treatments do you plan on installing?
Window treatments or curtains may seem like a trivial item to consider, but what you choose is important. Curtains and window treatments will allow you to define how much light is allowed into the media room or not - thus, glare can be avoided and the maximum beauty of the room you create can be established.

- What are you willing to spend on your media room?
Define a budget and stick to it. Outline all of your planned expenditures before you begin establishing the media room. Even if you lack the funds to afford the more expensive items now, the nice thing about media rooms is that you can continue to add to the room or upgrade equipment when the funds become available to you.

4. What to Put into Home Theatres

You can put whatever equipment you desire into your home theatre. Many people like to install projection screens, home theatre systems, wide screen televisions or HDTV, stereo systems and the like. Along with a projection screen television, some homeowners make media rooms look exactly like movie theatres with the dramatic draperies and movie house-like seating.

In addition to the above-mentioned items, you may want to add a special section for gaming. A large television with a place where children can enjoy all of their favorite video games can be included in media rooms or you can opt to create a children's corner. Children will feel as if they are truly a part of the family when they have a special section of the media room of which they can call their own.

5. Media Rooms and Entertainment

When it comes to choosing the television for the media room, you will find that you have a number of options available. You can choose from Plasma televisions, wide screen televisions, wall mount televisions or televisions that have HDTV technology. The choice is totally up to you however, you will need to plan the layout of your media room before you shop. By planning the layout of your media room you will know if you have enough room for the size television you plan to install.

Acoustics are also a consideration that you will have to address when you are establishing a media room. You will want to consider if you want your entertainment to deliver surround sound, and if so, how you can establish the room to deliver the best quality. In terms of music, your stereo system will have to be selected as well, and you may want to think about installing satellite radio.

Amplifiers can also be installed in your media room to improve the audio output within the room. Many home theatres include amplifiers when you purchase them but you may decide to purchase amplifiers separately from a selected home theatre package. Meanwhile, you can add CD players, DVD players, DVR players, VCRs and DSS Receivers can be installed to augment the innovative technology included in your media room.

6. Media Rooms and More Entertainment Necessities

You can opt to buy every piece of a home theatre separately or you can purchase a complete home theatre set. The set usually includes the television or projection screen, the sound system, and sometimes includes amplifiers. When you purchase a home theatre set you may be required to purchase other equipment separately - DVD players, VCRs and other equipment may or may not be included in the system that you select.

If you purchase a home theatre set it is sometimes referred to as an all-in-one or a home theatre in a box. Several manufacturers are now offering such sets to consumers seeking home theatre entertainment. The nice thing about such systems is that they can be purchased at reasonable costs. Homeowners also find that they can often install a theatre in a box system without having to engage in extensive remodeling.

7. Media Rooms and Comfort

Comfort is key when you are establishing your media room. A media room is some place where you will be spending quite a bit of free time and you will want to maximize the beauty and atmosphere that the room delivers to you and your guests. It may serve you to sketch a floor plan so that you can plot where all of the equipment will be placed in your media room. You may also want to include a special location for books, where your speakers will be placed, and other room elements. For example, some homeowners add a fireplace to increase the coziness of the media room - if you plan to do so, sketch the location of the fireplace as well.

Next, you will need to spend time shopping for the furnishing you plan to include in your home theatre. Seating is important and there are special chairs designed just for media rooms. You may want to shop around and view chairs with different materials - try some out and see how they feel to you. You and your guests will spend a lot of time sitting and relaxing in chairs and the chairs will have to offer enough roominess to provide comfort for several hours at a time.

In addition to the furnishings you will be shopping for, you will also want to shop for quality carpeting and padding. If you choose carpeting over hardwood floors, the thicker the padding for the carpet, the more comfortable the carpet is to walk on and sit on. Bear in mind however that thicker padding costs more money than the traditional thinner padding that is found beneath many installed carpets.

8. Media Room Design and Décor

Eventually you will be decorating the media room you wish to establish in your home. When that occurs, whether you use wallpaper or paint, many professional decorators suggest that you use warm colors. Warm colors cue individuals that it is time to relax - cooler colors produce the opposite effect. Therefore, no matter what decorating style you use, you will want to focus on a color scheme that is warm and earthy.

When you decide to paint the media room you will want to stay away from high gloss paint - the latter act will reduce the glare produced by the room's lighting. The ceiling should also have a non- glaring coat of paint if you choose to paint it. Some homeowners go with a drop down ceiling or a stucco ceiling; again, the choice is yours.

When you choose the carpet, as mentioned earlier the padding needs to be considered. What also needs to be considered in terms of carpet selection is how much traffic you will have in the room. Since you will spend a lot of time in a media room and may even be eating in the room from time to time, you may want to consider a stain resistant carpet or one that is easy to vacuum, shampoo and maintain.

9. Media Rooms and Storage Space

Within your media room you have the chance to optimize your storage capacity with large oversize cabinets. With large oversize cabinets you can store video games, videocassette recorder tapes, DVDs, CDs, gaming units and more. If you opt for large oversized cabinets with lighting, when you search for media stored in the cabinets you will be able to easily find what you are looking for.

The storage in your media room will allow you to remain organized and easily locate all of your media resources. You can take the opportunity to create an organization system that allows you to find the CDs, DVDs, and VCR tapes you enjoy instantly. Finally, when it comes to the cabinetry you select you have numerous options open to you. From simple cabinets with standard shelves, to cabinets with swivel units, you can install cabinets that you find pleasing to the eye and practical.
