Steps

  1. If your advisor would not suggest a topic for your dissertation, ask him why he would not. A dissertation is a collaborative effort between you and your advisor. Both of you must be interested in seeing the dissertation finish. If your advisor is not interested in working with you on the dissertation, it is high time to change your advisor. It is also best to ask him about the reson for his decision.
  2. If several topics have been suggested by your advisor, decide which ones you are interested in. Your interest in the subject is crucial.
  3. Think about the future, when you will need to present the results of your dissertation at a job talk or an interview. How presentable is the subject of your dissertation? Is it a mainstream subject or a marginal subject? Is it a high-impact subject or a low-impact subject. Since you will be working on your dissertation for the next few years, it is best to think long-term and evaluate your decision from this prospective.
  4. Talk to your peers and to established researchers in the field. Ask them for advice. Ask them what they would choose and why. Get them interested in the subject, so that they can help you along the way in the future. In general, the more feedback you receive about your chosen subject, the better. Your initial decision may not be justified. Feedback from your peers and your seniors will be most helpful.
