Steps

  1. For Maytag washers, use the putty knife to pop up the control panel by sliding it underneath the control panel on the far left. Repeat this step on the far right side.
  2. For Whirlpool washers, use the screwdriver to remove the two screws from the back of the unit. Note: If there are no screws on the backside of the Whirlpool washer, remove the decorative end caps on each end of the control panel to expose the screws.
  3. With the control now released, flip it back out of the way and disconnect the lid switch. Be sure to place the wires up out of the way so they don't get caught inside the washer.
  4. Using the screwdriver, pop out the two brass springs.
  5. With the lid open, grasp the cabinet and lift it up and tilt it forward at the same time. Place it out of the way.
  6. The pump and motor will be located underneath the washer drum. Remove the two black clips holding the pump in place and swing it out of the way.
  7. Disconnect wiring harness.
  8. Remove two brackets and two screws holding the motor in place. Remove motor.
  9. The coupler will now be expose. One half will be attached to the motor, the other half will be attached to the transmission shaft.
  10. Remove both pieces of the coupler. Note: The black cardboard piece that sits in the middle of the coupler is usually in small pieces. It is shown in good condition in photos.
  11. Put the new coupler on. You may need a piece of pipe and hammer to secure half of the coupler to the transmission shaft.
  12. Reassemble the dryer in reverse. Replace the motor, motor brackets and screws. Connect the wiring harness and replace pump and pump brackets.
  13. Replace the cabinet, making sure to line up the small holes with the tabs. Finish by replacing the brass springs, reconnecting the lid switch and reattaching the control panel (and screws if applicable).
