  1. Cut out a square of replacement drywall a least 4 inches wide and long enough to cover the damaged area.
  2. Trace the outline of the replacement square on the damaged wall
  3. Cut out the damaged drywall using a drywall saw or rotozip type tool, be sure to follow the lines made in step 2. Test fit the replacement square in the cutout. Do not drop the replacement square into the wall.
  4. Cut a piece of wood 2X4 or 1X4 1.5 inches longer than the height of the replacement square.
  5. Place the wood inside the wall and secure to the wall with drywall screws.
  6. Place the replacement square over the wood to enclose the wood, and secure the replacement square with drywall screws.
  7. Tape and texture the area as desired to match the surrounding area.
  8. Paint the repaired area to match the surrounding area.

Tips

  • Be sure to use the same thickness drywall as the existing wall.
  • Start a drywall screw into the replacement square as a grip to hold the replacement square while test fitting the piece into the new hole.
  • Do not over tighten the drywall screws.
  • Get matching paint; you don't want it to look mismatched.
