Steps
- Do not attempt to remove the bees yourself! Though you may read of homemade solutions and precautions, the best way to properly remove bees so they will not return is to call a professional!
- Call your local bee removal service. If you can't find bee removal in the phone book, try contacting your local county extension agent or fire department, they will know of bee removal services in the area.
- Questions to ask. A good bee removal service will not only remove all of the bees, but the hive as well. Bees have an excellent sense of smell, so any hive left behind is a signal that this is a great place to build a hive. If all of the hive is not removed, they will return!
- Money shouldn't be an issue. A good removal service will charge from $50 to $200, depending on the hive size. You may find cheaper, but the service may not be thorough.
- To prevent future bee colonies from building near you, pick up all containers such as baskets or buckets that could attract a swarm. Also, check the buildings on your property to make sure there are no holes for bees to enter the structure.
Tips
- Your local county extension agent or fire department will know the bee removal services available in your area. Do not, however, use the emergency number (911 or equivalent) to contact them. All emergency services such as a fire department also have a non-emergency number. Check your local phone book.
- Bees do not sleep. They may congregate on the inside of the hive during cooler temperatures for warmth but they are performing such duties as tending to the brood, building comb, processing honey, etc.
- Simply spraying the nest with pesticides and covering the openings will not stop the bees from returning, nor will it kill all the bees within the hive. Bees have excellent chemoreceptors and are attracted to sites which smell of the comb of previous nests. You must remove all of the bee hive for a successful bee removal.
Warnings
- Bees are dangerous and have been known to cause death in humans, do not attempt to approach the hive without proper protection.
- Once bees have made a hive and begun to produce honey and brood, they will become very defensive and aggressive. Call a bee removal service as soon as you notice the bees!
