How to Get Rid of Grubs Greeley CO

Grubs can sure mess up a lawn. They destroy all the grass and leave a big brown spot behind. This method surely works. If you can pull up your lawn like a carpet, then you have grub damage. The grubs you find in a lawn are the grubs from Japanese beetles. Japanese beetles are dormant in the winter, and then fly and lay their eggs in mid-July. In August, the grubs start to to move to the surface of your lawn, and while doing this, eat the roots of the grass. The time to treat the affected area is right after the beetles lay the eggs.

Steps

For Preventative treatment:
  1. Treat your lawn during the first two weeks of July with products containing imidacloprid or halofenozide. These chemical will poison the grubs, and kill them as they hatch. Merrit is one such product.
  2. Apply the product following the directions on the package.
  3. If you want a more organic option, then you can apply Milky Spore. This is a disease that will kill off the Japanese Beetles. You need to apply it in the Spring, Summer, and Fall for two years. This will insure that your lawn is "infected" and will remain so for at least ten years. Note that some grubs are not treatable by Milky Spore and require a Merrit application.
For curative treatment:
  1. Treat in the spring (from March to mid-May) or fall (Sept 1 to Nov 1) with carbaryl and trichlorfon. The grubs stop feeding in late may and curative products are no longer affective.

Tips

  • Obviously the size of the brown patch will determine the number of holes. You may need to experiment a little bit. Regular beer works better than lite beer, but as for brands the grubs do not seem picky.
  • Japanese Beetles only lay their eggs in sunny areas.
  • Merrit is only effective for three months. Resist the temptation to apply it too early.
  • Not only do the grubs do damage to your lawn, but many animals feed on grubs. By allowing grubs to remain in your yard, you might find that it will increase the tendancy of skunks and raccoons to come to your yard.

Warnings

  • Follow all the directions on the packages when you apply any product to your lawn.
  • Make sure to add water to the product.
