Steps

  1. Prepare a pen and paper. Write numbers from 1 to 12, because there will be 12 elements that will be evaluated. Every element will have different percentage; write down the percentage if the website has the element.
  2. Open a Google page. Write a keyword that has connection with the products/services (it can also be the company?s name). Check whether the website is on the top list. (20%)
  3. Change the keywords several times, even with misspelled company?s name to make sure the customers can find the website with only a few information. (5%)
  4. Click the link to the website from Google?s list, or type the URL if you can?t find the link on Google. The landing page appears. (3%)
  5. Check whether it has a flash application. Flash application is a kind of animation where you can mouse over on each navigation. If there is a Flash, click any links and check whether it works without long loadings. Long loadings will carry away the customers. (8%)
  6. Look at the navigations (on the left side or top) on the landing page, roll over your mouse. A good website gives highlight to the navigation when you roll over it. (7%)
  7. Click on one of the navigations, it should open a new page without going to a new tab or new window on your browser. (10%)
  8. Go around the other pages; see what always appear in every page. Navigations, the company?s contact, and legal copyrights (on the bottom page) should always appear in every page so the users don?t loose track. (10%)
  9. To look professional the website should have the same colors as the corporate colors. These colors should be applied to every page. (8%)
  10. Move on to the contents, click one of the navigations and read the content. The language should be straight to the point and informative. Avoid jargons. (8%)
  11. Look at the chunk of information, the headings should have different font format (bold, italic, size, color, and highlight) than the general content. (5%)
  12. Go to the contact and company information, check if they have a section for the customers or users to give opinions. It can be a blog, a form that the users can fill in, or simply their email or phone number. (11%)
  13. Go around the pages one more time and make sure all the links work. Broken links show that you don?t maintain your website regularly. (5%)

Tips

  • If you are hosting a website, to get an exact outcome of your Marketing budget, you can use web traffic software to track your website?s visitors. There are some free software that can maintain daily traffic of your website and give full reports. (this element is an extra 20% point if you know whether the website uses web traffic software or not)
  • If the website you evaluate has at least 80% of the elements, it can be considered as a successful website from marketing point of view.
