Steps

  1. Back up your files Find some external drive to duplicate your old files on to. This step is only necessary if you want to keep the files on your old computer. If you have files saved on a LAN (Local Area Network) then you needn't worry about those as they can be moved when the computer is hooked up to the network. It doesn't matter what you back them up on, you could use anything from an external hard drive to 158 USB thumb drives, but a hard drive is best. Once you are all backed up you may move on.
  2. Take down your old computer Disconnect all of the wires one at a time. If they are all tangled up, untangle them. You won't want to have to deal with an endless tangle of wires.
  3. Store the parts Take the monitor and tower off the desk and either store them somewhere or sell them depending on what the better choice would be in the situation you are in.
  4. Clean off your desk This step is optional, but it will make it easier for you to set up your new computer on a clean desk. Besides, there's nothing huge on it anymore. Cleaning your desk has never been easier!
  5. Set up the new computer Now set up the new computer like you did your old one. Some newer monitors have USB ports in them so don't forget to hook up the uplink (this will allow you to plug in USB devices with ease. Some new monitors double as a USB hub). If your new computer came with a new mouse and/or keyboard then hook those up with it.
  6. Connect your new computer to the network you were previously on
  7. Start using your new computer

Tips

  • If you get a USB mouse and keyboard plug them into the USB ports on the back. Plugging them in on the front is unsightly.

Warnings

  • The mouse and keyboard will have a round end that goes into the PS2 port. The green is the mouse, the purple is the keyboard. Do NOT get them mixed up. If they have a rectangular end then they will plug into the USB ports and you have nothing to worry about.
