How to Clean up for Guests

Cleaning for guests isn't the easiest thing in the world, nor is it fun if your house is a little more messy than usual. Here's a list of things you should do to clean up properly:

Steps

  1. Gather together all cleaning supplies (Comet, Non-Porous Surface Cleaner, polish, dusting cloths, etc) and put them in a box. Also have a vacuum cleaner available
  2. Put a clothes basket in every room. Empty all the rubbish bins. Collect old cutlery and plates from bedrooms/rooms they don't belong in.
  3. Wipe down the oven and the fridge.
  4. Pick up dirty laundry in the bathroom. Wipe down the bath, the shower and the sink. Clean the toilet.
  5. Make all the beds and clear clutter aside in bedrooms. Vacuum if needed.
  6. Wipe down surfaces in the living room and clear clutter.
  7. If, whilst doing the above, you've found things that don't have a home, shove them all in a box/hamper. You can sort them out after the guests have gone.
  8. Add air fresheners in rooms that need them.

Tips

  • Don't do it alone! Have the kids or even your spouse pitch in. This is their place, too, ya know. Give everyone a task.
  • Don't wait until the last minute! Doing so will have a bad effect on the final outcome. Give yourself goals (ex: kitchen done by Wednesday, bedrooms done by Thursday, bathrooms done by Friday, finish up on Saturday morning, guests arrive Saturday evening).
  • Have music playing while you tidy - it will motivate you.
  • Take a photo of your messy house. If you can't be bothered to tidy, just look at the photo. Seeing it on a piece of paper will spur you into doing something.

Warnings

  • Keep cleaning substances out of reach of children 8 and under.

  • Vacuum (optional)
  • Music
  • Rags
  • Latex Gloves
  • dust rag
  • furniture polish
