Steps

  1. Empty your washing machine.Add 1 cup of white vinegar into your washing machine as it fills using hot water.
  2. Let machine go through an entire wash and rinse cycle.Add 1 cup of Borax into your washer as it fills with water. Wait for the agitator to start turning so the borax dissolves, then add the soured laundry.
  3. Put in your laundry and let it soak for about 20-30 minutes after agitating thoroughly,to remove any previous remaining odors.
  4. Add detergent that has a fragrance so that your clothes come out smelling nice and clean.

Tips

  • Choose fragrance-free products in your dryer (and washer). If scented products are used, those who are allergic or have asthma may be made ill not when the encounter your clothing but by the exhaust in the air. Should you or anyone in your family become allergic or asthmatic in the future (these are aquired conditions), synthetic laundry fragrances are extremely difficult or impossible to remove, both from your clothing, your laundry and your home itself.
  • Do not use fabric softeners. In addition to being very difficult to remove, they will cause towels not to be absorbant, and "technical" clothing such as Gore-Tex may lose the "waterproof yet breathable" qualities you desire and paid good money for.
  • If possible, hang clothes outdoors to dry.
  • If you have radiator heat, drying your clothing on or above them saves energy, puts needed moisture in the air, and really freshens clothing.
  • Use phosphate-free soaps/detergents in order to improve the health of our ecosystem.
