Steps

  1. Get a bucket of sidewalk salt and carefully sprinkle a path to the sidewalk with it.[1]
  2. Carefully walk to the sidewalk, and try and get to some snow, or ground. Just try to stay off the ice.
  3. Once at the sidewalk, spinkle salt in an S pattern, and put about one tablespoon per square foot (manufacture recommended).
  4. Once you have firm footing on some ice, use a hoe and scrape away the ice.
  5. Do not leave the broken ice on the sidewalk, push it into snow, grass, or the road.
  6. Once all the ice is gone, layer the sidewalk again with another thin layer of sidewalk salt.
  7. You may need to repeat this regularly until the frost is completely gone.

Tips

  • Always keep a bucket of sidewalk salt, a shovel, and a hoe on your porch in winter so you don't have to slip on ice to get them.
  • Take twenty minuite intervals scraping ice and taking a break until all the ice is gone.

Warnings

  • Wear warm clothing.
  • Don't slip on the ice, it can break bones or crack your head. Be very, extremely careful when doing this!

Things You'll Need

  • Sidewalk scraper
  • Plastic bucket with handle
  • 5 lb. bag of sidewalk salt
  • Pail (non metal)
  • Winter clothing
